It has been revealed by the Executive Mansion that the ruling Unity Party (UP) government of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai plans to urgently print new Liberian dollar banknotes.

This was made known today, Tuesday, April 7, 2026 in a press release from the Liberian presidency announcing that President Boaki has written House Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon requesting that the 55th Legislature suspends its current recess to convene a 10-day Special Session starting this Thursday, April 9, 2026 to deliberate on the printing of the additional money and the passage of the 2026 Supplementary Budget.

The President’s communication is in line with Article 32 (b) of the Liberian Constitution.

Article 32 b of the country’s 1986 constitution says:

“The President shall, on his own initiative or upon receipt of a certificate signed by at least one-fourth of the total membership of each House, and by proclamation, extend a regular session of the Legislature beyond the date for adjournment or call a special extraordinary session of that body to discuss or act upon matters of national emergency and concern. When the extension or call is at the request of the Legislature, the proclamation shall be issued not later than forty-eight hours after receipt of the certificate by the President.”

President Boakai spoke of the need for the urgent recall of the Lawmakers to act on several “time‑sensitive proposals require immediate legislative action.” Boakai expressed confidence that lawmakers will honor the call in the interest of the country and move swiftly on the pending fiscal and monetary measures.

It is so far not known the amount of new Liberian dollar banknotes the government urgently intends to print, the denominations or what has prompted this urgency.

Lawmakers recently began their Legislative break before Easter to resume in May this year.

Last printing LD banknotes printing was in 2022

But the last time Liberia printing new banknotes was in September 2022, when the the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) issued several new banknotes. And those banknotes featured images of key historical figures and everyday citizens.

Those banknotes, which are still in circulation today, are in denominations of L$20, L$50, L$500, and the highest denomination of L$1,000.

The L$100 banknote was issued late in 2021, the first in a new family of Liberian dollar currency to be printed in 2021, 2022, and 2024. Liberia Issues New Banknotes: $20, $50, $500, and $1,000 – Keesing Platform
