Another case of domestic violence has gone fatal, with a 38-year-old man identified as Mohammed Fofana being arrested and detained by the Police for allegedly killing his girlfriend, who was 8 months pregnant in the Gardnersville suburb of Monrovia.
The woman was eight months pregnant.
This is the latest in a series of tragic domestic violence incidents around Liberia in recent weeks.
Mohammed Fofana, alias “Laye” who allegedly killed his pregnant girlfriend, Aminata Talawally in Shoe Factory Community in Gardnersville, has seen the police arrest, investigated and sent the suspect to the Monrovia City Court at the Temple of Justice.
And Magistrate Ben Bacon has since incarcerated Fofana in the Monrovia Central Prison.
His detention by the Judge on Monday, May 29, 2023 came after the Liberia National Police forwarded defendant Fofana to the court for prosecution.
The defendant was arrested by the Police and acquainted with his Miranda rights, investigated, and subsequently charged with Murder, for assaulting his girlfriend who was later pronounced dead on arrival by Doctor Kargbo on May 17, 2023.
According to the police charge sheet, during CSD’s in-depth investigation conducted, it was revealed that defendant Fofana and the late Talawally were boyfriend and girlfriend who have known one another in their relationship, more than three years ago, but lived at separate locations.
“It was further revealed that on May 17, 2023, between the hours of 4-5 a.m, an altercation ensued between the defendant and the victim were in the victim room at NTA-Community which degenerated to a fight between both of them for allegedly insulting his (defendant Fofana)’s mother,” the charge sheet disclosed.
It also revealed that the police investigation also established that Talawally (deceased) went unconscious through the fight with the defendant (her boyfriend) and he abandoned her in the room when he knew full well that he beat his girlfriend and she became helpless, while he went away for more than three hours before returning to his girlfriend pretending that he brought her food money.
The charge sheet said upon the defendant’s arrival at his girlfriend’s house, he met the girl lying down unresponsive, at which time he called community members to see the conditions of his girlfriend in the room.
“The community members’ having observed the victim’s condition has been unresponsive, they decided to have the Police of Gardnerville, Zone Four (4) Station informed,” the police charge stated,” police charge sheet explained.
According to the charge sheet, based on the information the Zone Four Police base responded to the scene and accessed the victim’s conditions, and immediately contacted the Homicide Squad at Central Police Headquarters.
During the police investigation of defendant Fofana, he attempted to deny his involvement, but he later admitted to his involvement, based upon skillful questioning by the CSD’s investigators as well as the witnesses’ account.
The act of murder allegedly committed by defendant Fofana is a violation of Chapter 14, Section 14.1 of the revised penal law of Liberia.
