Monrovia, June 29, 2026 – Communications professionals from World Bank-supported projects, government ministries and agencies in Liberia have undergone a capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening how development results are communicated to the public. This is a critical step toward building trust, promoting accountability, and deepening citizen engagement in the country’s development process.
Organized by the World Bank in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the workshop focused on mainstreaming communications into World Bank-financed projects. It equipped participants with practical strategies for integrating communications into project planning and implementation, with particular emphasis on demonstrating measurable impact rather than simply reporting activities.
World Bank Country Manager for Liberia, Georgia Wallen, emphasized the strategic importance of the training. “Communications should not merely tell people what we are doing; it should clearly demonstrate the results we are achieving and the difference those results are making in communities,” she said.
Ms. Wallen noted that effective communication is essential to ensuring that development initiatives are understood, appreciated, and supported by the Liberian public. She urged participants to move beyond event reporting and show how projects are improving livelihoods, strengthening institutions, and advancing national development goals.
The World Bank Group’s program in Liberia totals approximately US$1 billion and supports key sectors, including health, education, roads, energy, water, social protection, private sector development, agriculture, governance, and accountability. These projects belong to the Government of Liberia and are implemented by the government. Communications Specialists and Officers involved in World Bank-financed projects play a vital role in helping Liberian stakeholders – and the wider world – understand how these public resources are improving lives in Liberia, Ms. Wallen added.
The workshop is expected to build a cadre of communications professionals equipped to adopt innovative storytelling techniques, leverage digital platforms, and engage stakeholders in ways that foster informed public participation. The World Bank aims to embed communication as a core function of project delivery across all its financed interventions in Liberia, contributing to greater development impact and stronger citizen ownership of results.
The training is part of the World Bank’s broader and sustained engagement in Liberia, where the institution supports a portfolio of development projects. This commitment to strengthening institutional capacity reflects the World Bank’s recognition that effective communication is not a peripheral function, but a key pillar of successful, transparent, and accountable development delivery.
