Amidst a rise in crimes, police in Liberia’s southern Grand Bassa County have arrested a 30-year-old man identified as Alphanso Smith for allegedly murdering his two-week old twin baby.

The incident happened on Sunday (April 29, 2018) in Kpada Town, District Number One.

According to the Commander of the Crime Services Division Mr. Joe Washington, the incident happened in the wake of a fist fight between him (the husband) and the mother of the infant identified as Hannah Smith, age 23.

Police investigation showed that the man apparently wanted to have intercourse with her but she resisted, which led to the fight, and police have described the killing to be a “gruesome murder”.

The CSD Boss told the local Magic FM community radio in Buchanan on Monday that during the fight, Mr. Alphanso Smith allegedly gashed Hannah with a cutlass on her neck and thigh.

Commander Washington said she received serious bodily wound as she was taken to a clinic in the district, where she is currently undergoing treatment.

According to the information the CSD gathered in the community, when he got through with his wife, he went to the two baby girls and stepped on them, something Commander Washington said was done “intentionally.”

The suspect was arrested and brought to the police headquarters in Buchanan for investigation, Mr. Washington stated.

In a related development, the CSD Commander mentioned that an 88 year old man identified as Mr. James Dweh who choked his wife, Cecelia Dweh to death was transferred on Monday, April 30, to the Buchanan Magisterial court.

He said the incident happened last Friday in the Kaytor Town Community in Buchanan.

According to the CSD Boss, Mr. Dweh has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of his 60 years old wife he allegedly strangulated in the room about mid night.

Family sources informed the police that the alleged murderer has been sick for the past six months and has not been behaving normal.

Speaking on Magic FM, the CSD Commander called on men to stop violence against women and treat them with respect and dignity, rather than taking away their lives.
