Yekepa ̶ Liberia’s Health Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah has commended ArcelorMittal Liberia for its tremendous support to the country’s health sector, especially during this time of the fight against the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Visiting the company’s Yekepa Hospital at the weekend, Dr. Jallah named the donation of medical supplies including much-needed ventilators, oxygen concentrations, and COVID-19 test kits from ArcelorMittal Liberia as support that helped boost Liberia’s fight against COVID-19, a press release from ArcelorMittal Liberia said on Sunday, February 28, 2021.

“I would like to thank ArcelorMittal Liberia for all the support they have provided to the Ministry of Health (MOH) throughout the COVID-19 period. The company provided ventilators, COVID test kits, PPE’s and other supplies. We really appreciate the partnership and support they have given us,” said Dr. Jallah.

The Liberia health Minister who is on a tour of various health facilities along the Liberia-Guinea border in the wake of the outbreak of the Ebola virus in neighboring Guinea expressed satisfaction over the quality of services and the level of Ebola and COVID-19 preparedness at the ArcelorMittal Hospital in Yekepa.

Given the proximity of the ArcelorMittal Liberia Yekepa Concession to the border with Guinea, the Liberian Health Minister stressed that it is important for the health facility to have the necessary equipment and committed staff to help.

ArcelorMittal Liberia has renovated sections of its hospitals and outfitted them with new equipment and supplies including modern ventilators and personal protective equipment. Hospital staff have also received specialized training in anti-COVID measures and enhanced treatment techniques.

She said that AML’s hospital’s preparedness to tackle the pandemic give reassurance that the facility is delivering the desired services to residents in and out of Yekepa.  Minister Jallah encouraged the hospital staff to continue their extremely important work and contributions to the health needs of the citizens.  She noted that during the last Ebola outbreak, many health workers died but that with adherence to safety protocols and keen attention to universal precaution, fatalities can be prevented among health workers.

The AML hospitals provide medical services and treat more than 30,000 patients annually, including employees and residents from nearby communities.

The Minister of Health called on Liberians to reflect on what happened during the Ebola outbreak in 2014, noting that “if we all work together with communities, districts, and counties jointly fighting the disease, we can beat Ebola again if it enters Liberia.”  She urged Liberians to continue to observe all the health and prevention measures put in place for Ebola and COVID-19 and to not be in denial about the two diseases.

During the tour, Dr. Jallah met with ArcelorMittal Liberia Hospital senior staff including Dr. Patrick Kamara and Hospital Manager Weimie-dehtho Mhenduah who both led the tour.

On behalf of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Scott Lowe, Mehnduah extended profound gratitude to Dr. Jallah and her team for the visit and reassured of ArcelorMittal Liberia’s active involvement and continued support to efforts to prevent Ebola and COVID-19.
