Today, Sunday, December 11, 2022, Edina City in Liberia’s Grand Bassa County will host The Dumboy Festival. The event, normally held in December Holidays is a celebration of Grand Bassa’s favorite local dish, the Dumboy.
At this year’s festival, guests will begin the day with a short service at the Baptist Church, built in 1832, followed by a full day of activities – boat tour, beach feast, city tour, music and gold old fashioned fun for the holidays. Open to the general public, this is a chance to sample the dumboy in its many states – breadfruit, gritter, plantain and more. Beyond the food, the festival is cultural extravaganza that will showcase cultural performances. The festival will draw visitors from Monrovia and the county.
About Historical City of Edina
Edina is a quaint historical town, where visitors enjoy walking tours after an exciting ride from Upper Buchanan, through the tri-confluence of Benson, Mechlin and St. John River. Take a trip into the past with monuments, old historical homes, graves, churches, canon and other artifacts.
Experience Edina Heritage Tour by land or water, it’s your choice. By water, the tour begins at Upper Buchanan with visits to homes and churches built by freed blacks who migrated from the United States to Africa in search of a new home in the early 1800s. Board a boat at the bank of the Benson River for an amazingly serene ride on probably Africa’s only tri-confluence, where the Benson, St. John and Mechlin Rivers merge along mangroves, the Atlantic and beautiful natural landscapes. The ten to fifteen minutes boat ride lands in Edina, home to freed blacks who settled and raised their families including President Joseph J. Cheeseman, the 12tht President of Liberia from 1892 to 1896. With 1800s style homes and churches, monument and other artifacts, the walking tour is a moving experience into the life and times of early African Americans determined to build a life for themselves on the continent from which their ancestors were hauled in the 1700s.
The pristine, clean, and secluded Edina beach is away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The Edina Beach is also the nesting spot for sea turtles. Located on the Edina coast, this is where those who need peace and quiet escape.
