BUCHANAN, Liberia- The lifeless body of an unidentified woman was found floating in muddy waters along the main road leading to the Port of Buchanan, near the concession of ArcelorMittal Iron Ore Company.
The incident, which occurred amidst a heavy downpour of rain on Friday, June 28, 2024, unfolded in the Moor Town Community, leaving local residents bewildered and scrambling for answers.
The woman, believed to be in her late 30s, was found with an unsettling detail: A resident of the community Rebecca Sumo and other eyewitnesses reported seeing fumes coming from her mouth. Her body was seen lying near the riverbank.
A collection of clothes, neatly packed in a blue and white plastic bag, was seen on a large rock while some of the clothes were scattered on the rock, adding to the mysterious scene.
Despite the disturbing circumstances of her death, no immediate police presence was noted at the site to launch a preliminary/site investigation or confirm the cause of her demise. This underscores a troubling trend in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, where unexplained deaths have become increasingly common.
Local leader Francis Davis of Zone Six in Buchanan highlighted a recent incident involving another unidentified individual whose body was discovered under similar puzzling circumstances.
According to Davis, the man entered Moor Town Community, took a seat, and tragically passed away shortly thereafter. A15 men jury subsequent examination found no signs of foul play, yet questions lingered as to the cause of his sudden death.
These incidents reflect a wider pattern of unresolved deaths in the region, with law enforcement struggling to provide answers or apprehend suspects. Despite assurances from the Liberia National Police (LNP) of launching investigations into such cases, outcomes have often yielded little clarity or closure for affected families and communities.
