The number of 12th graders sitting this year’s WASSC Examinations in Liberia has increased over that of last year, 2018.

WASSCE is the West African Senior School Certificate Exams, which Liberia first began administering WASSC nationally in 2018. But there was mass failure in the first results last year.

Instead of 33,979 candidates who sat last year’s exams, the Education Ministry says 39,849 12th senior high school seniors across Liberia will write the 2019 WASSC Examinations slated for Wednesday, April 24, 2019.

Last year’s results

The local Office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC) recorded 21, 280 failures of students in last year’s exams.

The results released in early July 2018 by the Officer in Charge of WACE, Isaac Toe, 65.15 percent or 21,580  candidates failed while 34.85 percent  or 11, 544 candidates passed successfully in the WASSCE test.

Thirty two of the 600 high schools have 100 percent pass rate in at least one subject while 33 percent out of the 600 high schools 90 percent passing rate in at least one subject.

A press statement from Education Ministry said in Monrovia on Thursday said:

“Precisely 39,849 students are legible to sit this year’s WASSCE Examination from 651 schools at 237 centers across the country, 43,409 students are scheduled for the 9th grade WAEC Exam while 20, 507 students are qualified to sit the piloted 6th grade WAEC Exam,” the statement said.

Foreign scholarships incentive

Ahead of next week’s exams, the country’s Education authorities said it recently successfully conducted a mock WASSC exam program for high school seniors around the country. That came after months of national tutorial classes conducted during weekends to buttress students’ preparations for the 2019 WASSC.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education has reiterated that” the promised benefits of foreign scholarships to the top 10 (ten) high performing students on the WASSC Examination remains applicable.”

It says the best top 10 (ten) students for the upcoming WASSC Examination will be offered foreign scholarships to pursue further studies.
