The Journalists Union’s Pres. Julius Kanubah Vows “Recommendations Will Be Fully Implemented”

Questions are often raised in the larger society about “who watches the watchdogs?”
Now, the National Media Council of Liberia has formally presented its first investigative report on complaints regarding alleged ethical violations by some media institutions and Journalist, with a number of professional and ethical lapses highlighted.
In the full report, which is being reviewed by the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), will be release tomorrow, Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at the official ceremony marking the Journalists Union’s 62nd anniversary in Monrovia.
Sixty-two years ago (1964), the PUL was founded by a group of independent journalists. It serves as an umbrella organization for media professionals and institutions to advocate for press freedom and the legal protection of journalists.
In its latest report the National Media Council, headed by veteran Liberian Journalist, Aaron B. Kollie the CEO of Power TV/Radio, highlights a number of ethical breaches in its findings and calls out institutions and Journalists found wanting in the discharge of their professional and ethical responsibilities.
The Union’s President Julius Kanubah said that the role of the Media Council is to enhance ethical journalism, journalistic integrity, media professional, public trust, and dispute resolution.
“The recommendations will be fully implemented to the extent possible,” Kanubah said at a ceremony held on Monday, September 28, 2026 at the PUL headquarters on 9th Street in Monrovia.

Remarks by Julius Kanubah, President, Press Union of Liberia, on Occasion of the Submission of First Investigative Report of National Media Council of Liberia, PUL Head Office, 9th Street, Sinkor, 28 September 2026.
On behalf of the PUL, we are pleased to receive this First Investigative Report of the National Media Council of Liberia, the multi-stakeholders’ body responsible for handling and working to resolve complaints involving alleged ethical breaches by media institutions and journalists.
This first investigative report represents an important milestone and comes at an important time for the Press Union of Liberia. As you are aware, the Press Union of Liberia will this Wednesday, 30 September 2026 celebrate its 62nd anniversary.
We would like to commend and applaud the National Media Council for the time, energy, and resources invested in the investigations. We commend Chairman Aaron B. Kollie, Vice Chair Esther Davis Yango, Secretary Momolu S. Vannie, Mr. Edwin Clarke, Mrs. Torwon Solunteh Brown, Mrs. Veronica Songor Musah, and Cllr. Lamii Kpargoi.
I should say I attended some of the investigations and saw at first hand how tedious and important the work of the National Media Council is in enhancing ethical journalism, journalistic integrity, media professional, public trust, and dispute resolution.
The full report of the Council will be reviewed and released on Wednesday, 30 September 2026, during the celebrations of our 62nd anniversary.
The recommendations will be fully implemented to the extent possible.
At this point, we again say thanks to the National Media Council. We also like to encourage all journalists, media and communication practitioners to adhere to the highest ethical standards of journalism.
