Calls For Urgent Measures To Safeguard Women & Girls, Strengthen Responsible Digital Citizenship
Monrovia–The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has cautioned against the persistence of the politics of violence, which historically fueled Liberia’s armed conflict.
The Union stressed that this destructive politics continues to manifest in widespread poverty, inequality, and human insecurity endured by many Liberians more than two decades after the end of war.
Delivering a keynote address on Monday, 21 September 2026, to commemorate the International Day of Peace, PUL President Julius Kanubah highlighted the entrenched system of injustice in Liberia.
He observed that this system is evident in daily violations of human rights, including inadequate protection for women and girls, the silencing of youth and critical voices, and insufficient investment in responsible digital citizenship.
Mr. Kanubah called for urgent measures to safeguard women and girls, strengthen responsible digital citizenship, and actively invest in Liberia’s future through sustained support for peacebuilding initiatives.
This year’s International Day of Peace was organized by the Civil Peace Service Liberia Network, a coalition of seven civil society organizations – united by shared commitment to peacebuilding and sustainable development.
The celebration, held at the headquarters of the Liberia Opportunities Industrialization Center (LOIC) in New Matadi, brought together about one hundred participants.
Observed globally under the United Nations theme “Invest in Peace for Everyone, Everywhere, and Every Day”, the Liberian commemoration adopted the local theme “Protect People, Protect Voices, Promote Responsible Digital Citizenship.”
Speaking at the event, Madam Decontee George, Coordinator of the Civil Peace Service Liberia Network, emphasized that the local theme reflects the growing importance of the digital space in Liberia’s civic life, public dialogue, and advocacy.
She underscored the urgency of addressing gender-based online abuse and harassment, while stressing that protecting people online must also mean protecting their voices, said a PUL press release dated September 21, 2026.
