-To share research, Lecture at Regional Biomedical Conference

Liberian medical scientist and inventor, Dr. Dougbeh Christopher Nyan has been invited to speak at the Southern Africa Network for Biosciences (SANBio) annual biomedical conference in Pretoria, South Africa.

SANBio is an Agency Flagship of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), the economic development program of the African Union.

Dr. Nyan’s groundbreaking invention of the test that detects 3-7 infections in 10-40 minutes has continued to draw the interest of other African countries.

The test can detect HIV, hepatitis viruses, Dengue, West Nile, Yellow fever, Ebola, Typhus, Malaria and other infections under less than an hour.

A press release issued on Sunday said the biomedical conference will run from February 26-28, 2018.

It provides a shared research, development and innovation platform for collaborative research in biosciences, health, and nutrition.

During the event, Dr. Nyan will also lecture a summer class of medical students and doctoral candidates in aspects of animal-human preclinical and clinical research.  The students come from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries.

This year’s SANBio Event will be held under the theme, “Commercialisation of Research Technologies” and will bring together a network of national, regional and international stakeholders to discuss pertinent issues that are central to exploring new ways of innovating for the future of biosciences in the Southern African sub-region and Africa in general.

The event will also focus on infrastructural support for innovation, future trends in funding mechanisms of game changing innovations, and cultural changes in the research environment toward entrepreneurship.

Last December 2017, Dr. Nyan was invited by the Egyptian government to attend the Africa 2017 Business Forum, where his invention was recognized as one of the top three inventions in Africa.

In July last year, Dr. Nyan won the 2017 African Innovation Prize for Social Impact for his invention from among over 2,500 participants. The African Innovation Prize is an award organized by the African Innovation Foundation which was founded 7 year ago by Jean Claude Bastos de Morais, the Angolan-Swiss philanthropist-entrepreneur.

The African Innovation Foundation catalyzes the innovation spirit in Africa as well as supports and strengthens the African innovation ecosystem.

The SANBio 2018 Event is sponsored by the government of South Africa, the Finnish Southern African Partnership Program, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). The Event will offer opportunities to entrepreneur for commercialization of research technologies.

It is also intended for companies to engage with investors, and for academics to interact directly with industry and relevant policy makers from the SADC region.
