Grassroots football came to an end over the weekend in Kakata, Margibi County to climax the 2023-2024 third division league of the Liberia Football Association (LFA)- Margibi Sub-Association.
It was a dream come true for Lower League Club Weitown United FC to clinch the first ever domestic county championship.
Weintown United FC defeated Africa Sports Academy 2-1 in the final match of the competition at the Opened-air Nancy B. Doe Sports Stadium in Kakata Margibi County on Sunday, 21 April.
Two goals in the first half from Nathaniel Steven and Abraham Owen Tamba secured the club first ever county Championship.
Though such domestic silverware isn’t the first ever domestic silverware in Margibi County based on the success last season. Weintown United FC became champions in the last edition which the county had two Sub-associations.
The team clinched the first comparative trophy came during the 2022-2023 LFA-Margibi Sub-Association Third Division – Lower Sub-committee, but lost on the County Championship to Africa Sports Academy in the Margibi County Third Division League Championship.
An own goal scored during the grand final at the Unification Sports Pitch in Harbel gives the Upper-end Champions, Africa Sports Academy the Championship.
At the just ended LFA-Margibi Sub-Association Third Division 2023-2024: League Season Weintown United FC accumulated 36 points from 16 games played.
The 2023-2024 LFA-Margibi Sub-Association Third Division League Champions won 10 games and 6 draws with no defeat.
Its talisman, Blamo Weah recorded 13 goals to top the top scorer chat of the competition.
This achievement marks a remarkable milestone for the club because of its ambition to gain promotion to the second top-tier league of domestic football the Orange National League-2nd Division.
Champions Weintown United FC and runner-up SUSA FC will represent Margibi County in the 2023-2024 National Third Division Regional and Promotional Playoff schedule for May.
This year’s edition of the National Third Division Regional and Promotional Playoff marks the second for Weintown United FC.
In the previous edition in Montserrado County Weintown United FC gained a ticket after winning the Lower end competition which saw them along with former Champions Africa Sports Academy in such competition.
A win for the Margibi County Champions Weintown United FC on the field of play in the upcoming National Third Division Regional and Promotional Playoff marks the first ever since competing in such competition.
