SPORTS: Otis Tarnue’s Grand Bassa Squad Battles Z-billion All-Stars

Amidst the increase in cases of the coronavirus and with major footballing activities currently suspended, Grand Bassa County has started preparations for the the National County Sports Meet, which kicks off in December 2020.

The “Bassa Boys” on August 24-25, 2020 played a two-day National Flag Day tournament, which saw Grand Bassa County home base, falling to Grand Basss County Monrovia based in the two legs at the famous Doris Williams Sport Pitch in Buchanan,Grand Bassa County.

The home team was edged out by 1-0 by Grand Bassa County’s Monrovia-based. And in the return leg, Grand Bassa County home based was beaten 3-0 by Grand Bassa County’s Monrovia based squad.

According to the head coach of Grand Bassa County, Otis Tarnue, who spoke to our reporter said that the games play in Buchanan was to showcase players to be selected to form part of his squad for justification.

In it first comparative match outside of Buchanna, Grand Bassa County won a comfortable 5-2 win over Z-billion All-Stars on August 18, 2020 at the Voker Mission Sports pitch.

And on September 20, 2020 in her second competitive match, Grand Bassa County settled to an entertaining 1-1 draw against Barnesville All-Stars at the Barnesville Sports pitch.

Wellington Seah, alias ” Tshabalala” formerly of LPRC Oilers FC and Wantaga scored from the penalty spot in the first half of the match.

Back from recess after a splendid displayed from both teams second division team, Tony FC striker, David Paye got the equalizer in the dying minutes of the second half in the 40th minute of the second half.

Coach Tarnue, who is in charge, will be on the touch line for the return leg, when Grand Bassa County knocks horn with Z-billion All-Stars on Wednesday in the morning hours at the Voker Mission Sports pitch.

Also speaking to this Reporter, the Chairman of the Grand Bassa Sports Association, Jerry S. Vonyeegar has lauded the County’s Administration and the people of Grand Bassa for the level of commitment shown thus far in making sure this County is adequately prepared for the task ahead.

When asked as to when he will arrive in the country, Jerry S. Vonyeegar replied “I will be in the country shortly.”

Coach Otis Tarnue’s side is paired in Group B with host Bong, and Grand Gedeh, Grand Cape Mount Counties.

And he will be hoping for a fourth championship after an early exit of the 2019/2020 National County Sports meet, when his team was eliminated  in the group stage in Grand Bassa County behind Rivercess and Since Counties.

Grand Bassa County has won the National County Sports meet on three occasions in the male division.

In 1990, 2014 and 2016, Grand Bassa County defeated Montserrado County in a penalty shootout in the male final, after extra time.
