A suspect is in custody after a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner that caused law enforcement to swiftly evacuate President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump and other guests from the high-profile event.

“Everyone owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the courage of law enforcement,” Trump told reporters during a news briefing, after authorities rushed him and other top officials to the White House.

FBI Director Kash Patel told reporters agents quickly subdued the alleged shooter, though he did not name the man, and a long gun and shell casings were found on the scene. He will be arraigned on at least two charges on Monday, U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said.

The president told reporters that the suspect in the incident shot one Secret Service agent at close range, but he was saved by a bulletproof vest. Trump said he spoke to the officer, who was in “high spirits,” and told the man “we love him and respect him.”

The incident reminded many that former President Ronald Reagan was injured in an assassination attempt at the same hotel in March 1981. Then-White House Press Secretary James Brady and several law enforcement officials were also wounded.

Traditional afterparties move forward

Some of the many afterparties planned around the White House Correspondents’ Dinner moved forward Saturday night – despite the shooting and shutdown of the main event.

TIME Magazine opted to still host its bash at the Swiss Ambassador’s Residence, telling guests in an email that it wanted to recognize “the importance of the vital role journalists play everyday and especially at times like this.” MSNOW also continued with its”Democracy After Hours” party inside a former trolley car station.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner is known for spawning extravagant parties with celebrity attendees throughout the weekend in Washington. It’s unclear how many are expected to go on as scheduled.
