The National Chairman of the ruling Unity Party (UP) is poised to remain at the helm of Liberian politics for up to 200 years, patterning after the Grand Old True Whig Party, which led a one-party regime in Liberia for over one hundred years.
UP National Chairman, Rev. Luther Tarpeh has expressed optimism that the UP will govern Liberian people more than 200 years in the country.
Current President Joseph Nyuma Boakai used to be an official of the True Whig Party government under the late President William R. Tolbert, Jr., who lost power on April 12, 1980 in a bloody military coup.
Rev. Tarpeh, who simultaneously holds members on the Board of the National Port Authority (NPA), said his optimism is based on the projection that clearly indicates that the Unity Party remains supreme in the body politics in Liberia.
Speaking at the program marking the launch of a joint two-year strategic plan of the Unity Party National Cadets’ Unit and the Tertiary Education Students’ Confederation held in Monrovia during the weekend. Chairman Tarpeh disclosed that President Joseph Boakai is building the Unity Party far beyond his tenue because he wants to see UP in next century stronger, power and longer than the True Whig Party in governing the country.
Also speaking at the program, UP National Secretary, Amos Tweh, encouraged the members of UPNC and TESCON to sacrifice their time, energy and time for the party.
According to Mr. Tweh, most of the senior ranking members of the national executive committee of the Unity Party are holding big positions in government because of the sacrifices they made for the party over the years.
“Once you work hard for the party, the possibility of giving your leadership responsibility is easy,” he said; adding: “The Unity Party is the only political party where anyone can become prominent member.”
Remarking during the program, the National Chairman of the UPNC and TESCON, Lansanah Fofanah, said it is vision of the two organizations to begin training members and emerging leaders from high schools and universities throughout the country.
According to Mr. Fofanah, the two organizations now preparing to increase their memberships 85,000 in high schools and universities throughout Liberia.
The program, which was held under the theme: “Three Years of Preparing to takeover with Selfless Sacrifice and Commitment to the Unity Party,” was graced by a cross session of members of the national executive committee of the Unity Party and large number of students from high schools and universities from all over Liberia.
