As Community Seeks Economic Opportunity

GRANDCESS, Liberia— The city of Grandcess in the southeastern Grand Kru County is positioning itself to capitalize on its cultural heritage and tourism potential following the official dedication of the Mother Theresa Wrehdi Cephas Tourist Center, a new community facility expected to serve as a gateway for visitors and promote the city’s identity.
The dedication, held in Grandcess, was accompanied by the formal handover of a brand-new marching band valued at US$1,600, adding a cultural dimension to what community leaders say could become an important platform for local development.
The event attracted local authorities, traditional and community leaders, residents, youth representatives, and other stakeholders, with speakers emphasizing the need to turn the new investment into a sustainable community asset.
The newly dedicated tourist center is expected to provide a focal point for visitors interested in Grandcess and its surrounding areas.
Community leaders say the facility could help create greater visibility for the city, encourage visitors to explore its cultural and historical attractions, and potentially generate economic opportunities for local residents.
But turning the center into a functioning tourism hub will require more than a ceremonial opening.
Effective management, security, promotion, and regular maintenance are expected to determine whether the facility can achieve its intended purpose.
Speaking at the ceremony, Rev. Fr. Francis D. Topor II described the occasion as “another historic and important day” for Grandcess.
He praised Mother Theresa Wrehdi Cephas for her longstanding support to the community, citing her financial, material, and spiritual contributions.
Rev. Fr. Topor said her continued involvement has helped keep her presence and influence alive in the community despite her residence in the United States.
He urged residents to protect the tourist center and ensure that it is used wisely.
Representing Mother Theresa Wrehdi Cephas’ family, Emmanuel Wiefue handed over a new marching band to Grandcess City Mayor Hon. Augustine Klah.
Wiefue said the equipment, valued at US$1,600, was provided in response to a longstanding need within the community.
He reaffirmed Mother Theresa’s commitment to Grandcess and appealed to residents to properly maintain and utilize the equipment.
Mayor Klah thanked Mother Theresa for the donation, describing it as timely and a boost to the community.
The marching band is expected to support cultural celebrations, civic activities, and other public events in Grandcess.
Former Grandcess City Mayor and current District Commissioner Francis Charlie welcomed the development and called on other citizens of Grandcess, particularly those living in the United States and other parts of the world, to invest in their hometown.
Commissioner Charlie said community development should not be left entirely to government and encouraged citizens to return home, contribute resources, and support initiatives that can transform Grandcess and Grand Kru County.
He also urged the Grandcess City authorities to deploy security personnel and other staff to protect and manage the tourist center.The opening of the center now places a responsibility on local authorities to demonstrate that Grandcess can transform a community donation into a functioning tourism asset.
If properly managed and promoted, the facility could help attract visitors, strengthen cultural activities, and create opportunities for local businesses and young people.
But without adequate security, maintenance, staffing, and promotion, community leaders fear the center could eventually lose its value.
The real test will be whether the city can turn the new tourist center from a ceremonial achievement into a lasting engine for tourism, culture, and local economic activity.
