MONROVIA, Liberia— SAMA Mineral Holding Incorporated (SMHI), a prominent participant in Liberia’s mining and mineral sector, is hailing the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) for launching its comprehensive Gold Traceability and Capacity Building Training Program for licensed gold dealers, regional mining officers, and sector stakeholders across the country.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry under the leadership of the Liberian government represents a transformative step towards institutionalizing end-to-end transparency, regulatory compliance, and responsible sourcing throughout the gold value chain, a press release said.
By equipping dealers, brokers, and artisanal mining cooperatives with practical tools including digital tracking and alignment with the OECD due diligence guidance for responsible Supply Chains of Minerals in High-Risk Areas, the Liberian government is directly addressing historical vulnerabilities and building a modern framework for sustainable mineral management.
Speaking at the gathering of key sector players hosted by the Ministry of Mines and Energy on Wednesday, Minepakai Dumoe, Chief Executive Officer of Sama Mineral Holdings Incorporated, Highlighted the importance of coordination amongst dealers in Liberia mineral industry; stressing it will address the effects of regulation and guarantee beneficial interests.
The meeting focused on tracking, strengthening and documenting of Liberia’s legal trade and export of minerals
He stressed the importance of a devolved licensing regime; indicating it will produce a smooth and more responsive business environment.
He categorized the efforts of the Ministry as ‘farsighted reforms’ and greater actions aimed at simplifying the processes of acquiring and renewing mining licenses, as well as an engaged regulatory regime.
The Assistant Minister for Mines, Sumo Momolu indicated that the reforms and strengthening of the process of legal mineral trade is ‘ Work in Progress’ adding such reforms ‘were intended to deliver
growth in business climate and trade in minerals.’
He indicated that the traceability training seeks to reduce the impact of illegal trade in Liberia’s minerals.
Assistant Minister Momolu emphasized that the training also assured that those officially licensed were not short-changed by illegal miners. He applauded the preposition advanced by the SAMA Chief Executive, that such endeavour will leverage greater bargaining power of Cooperatives.
