To Revive Liberia’s Coffee Sector

VOINJAMA, Liberia–The Liberia Agriculture Commodity Regulatory Authority (LACRA) has officially launched the national coffee seedling distribution program in the northwestern Lofa County, marking a significant milestone in the government’s drive to revitalize the country’s coffee industry and improve the livelihoods of rural farmers.
The launch, held recently under the theme “Planting the Seeds of Prosperity: Revitalizing Liberia’s Coffee Sector for Sustainable Production,” brought together government officials, development partners, local authorities, traditional leaders, farmer cooperatives, and hundreds of coffee growers from across Lofa County.
As part of the initiative, thousands of improved coffee seedlings are being distributed to farmers in four districts of the County to promote sustainable coffee production, increase household incomes, and restore Liberia’s position as a competitive coffee-producing nation.
The program forms part of LACRA’s broader strategy to strengthen agricultural value chains and create long-term economic opportunities for farming communities.
Speaking at the launch in Voinjama, LACRA Deputy Director General for Operations and Technical Services Alpha K. Gonogolee emphasized that the distribution of quality seedlings represents more than an agricultural intervention—it is an investment in the future of Liberia’s coffee industry.
He cautioned beneficiaries to properly nurture the seedlings and adopt modern farming practices to ensure increased productivity and improved quality.
‘We as in institution remains committed to working closely with you as farmers, cooperatives, local governments, and development partners to expand coffee cultivation and support sustainable production across the country,” he noted.
Farmers who received the seedlings welcomed the initiative, describing it as a timely intervention that will help rejuvenate aging coffee farms, improve production, and enhance their economic well-being.
At the same time, the government is pledging to carefully manage the seedlings and encourage other farmers to participate in the national coffee revitalization effort.
Commissioners from the four benefiting districts also praised LACRA for selecting Lofa County as one of the beneficiaries of the national initiative, noting that the county has long been recognized as one of Liberia’s major coffee-producing regions.
According to Commissioner David Mawolo of Voinjama district, they as local leaders are indeed confident that the program will contribute to job creation, poverty reduction, and increased agricultural productivity.
The launch and distribution of coffee seedlings underscore the Government of Liberia’s commitment to rebuilding the coffee sector, promoting sustainable agriculture, and empowering rural communities through increased investment in one of the country’s traditional cash crops.
