With days to the 2020/2021 Orange-Liberia national league opening in the first and second divisions, the Grand Bassa County Sub Association of the Liberia Football Association has ended its pre-season tournament.
The Gbehzon’s Cup was played from the 23 October to 1 November 2020 at the zenith football house of Grand Bassa County the Doris Williams Sports pitch in Buchanan, some 88 miles from Monrovia..
Sixteen clubs from the third and community league division took part in this year’s 2020 Gbehzon’s Cup.
In the grand final at the Doris Williams Sports Pitch in Buchanan Grand Bassa County on Sunday, November 1, 2020, Francis Dazie and James Denis first half goal gave Dens Moines United a 2-0 lead over Future Star in the first half.
Back from the break, Jeremie Ballah scored to give Dens Moines United a 3-0 lead but substitutes Emmanuel Mankar and Abraham Nyakor two goals could not give future Star a win with Dens Moines United winning a narrow 3-2 win over Future Star to claim the trophy.
Speaking to www.newspublictrust.com, Daniel K. Baryogar, Secretary-General of the Grand Bassa sub association-Liberia Football Association said that the tournament was intended to get the teams prepare for the 2020/2021 upcoming Orange-Liberia league season.
“I want to thank all of the clubs who participated in this tournament and most especially Future Star for reaching this far for the successful completion of the 2020 Gbehzon’s Cup,” Mr. Baryogar said.
He used the occasion to categorically deny rumors that the tournament was sponsored by politicians.
According to Mr. Baryogar, the tournament is called Gbehzon’s Cup because it is the name of Buchanan city.
For his part, Chris Koko Wleh, President of Dens Moines United lauded his entire playing body for the high level of readiness for the upcoming season.
Mr. Wleh also extended thanks to Future Star for the high level of excellent football played today.
“Though is football game somebody must win but to admit you guys put out a good fight,” said Wleh.
This year was the second edition of the Gbehzon’s Cup with Compound Dream of District # 1 to win the 2019 edition.
Den Moines United is the current champions of the third division league of the Liberia Football Association in Grand Bassa County.
This year’s winner walked away with LD$15,000.00 and a giant size trophy while runner-up walked away with LD$10,000.00.
Champions Dens Moines United, runner-up Future Star, Flying Eagle, Bassa Young Pro, Compound Dream, Kild FC, Super Star FC and other teams participated in this year’s Gbehzon Cup.
