Tubman University Administration Suspend All Campus Based Political Activities, After Bloody Riot

HARPER, Liberia- The Administration of the second state owned institution of higher learning, Tubman University (TU) in the southeastern Maryland has suspended all campus based political activities, following serious violence this week, which left several persons injured,

As Charles Gbayor reports, some of the injured include students who are currently being treated at the James Jekins Dossen Referal Hospital here since the riot on Wednesday of this week.

The www.newspublictrust.com gathered that stones and sticks were thrown at each by rival students during the fight.

The Student Government Production room also suffers Major damage during the violence act by the two political parties when its door was forcibly broken down.

A press statement released by TU Administration said that the violence was between the Student Unification Alliance (SUA) and Tubman University Concerned Student Movement (TUSM)both Campus based political parties, which also led to the damaging the institution’s property and the unwarranted disruption of academic activities.

As a result of this week’s violence, all student based political parties and movements are hereby indefinitely suspended with immediate effect; as a consequence, no political party uniforms, caps, insignia, hand-bands and other paraphernalia shall be allowed on any of the campuses of the University, the statement said.

In addition, the Department of Security and Public Safety (in concert with state actors where applicable) is also ordered to launch a thorough investigation on the violence and report back to Administration for appropriate action.

According to the TU statement, issues regarding the Tubman University Student Government Association shall henceforth be handled by Student Affairs with advice from the Cabinet.

Note that Article 11.14 of the Student Handbook (2 Edition) maintains “zero tolerance” on violence. An important part of maintaining such an environment is the commitment to protect the health and safety of every member of the University Community. Abusive, hooligan, belligerent, profane, threatening

(physical or psychological) and inappropriate behavior on the part of any student, is  a blatant and gross violation. Students, who indulge in such acts and misconducts and are found guilty, may be subject to immediate and unconditional dismissal from the University.

Meanwhile, all faculty and Staff, as well as the general student populace are asked to go about their normal activities, as the TU administration continues investigation into the violence.
