Did UL authorities lie to graduates about printing of souvenir in China?

(Last Updated On: )

-Local Printer, Super Designs Inc. denies printing souvenir package for 99th Graduating Class

The local printing press, Super Designs Incorporated has denied media reports that it printed the souvenir package for the 99th graduating class of the University of Liberia (UL).

A 2018 graduate of the Liberia College alleged that a well-placed source at the UL  told her that the packages were produced at a local printing press on 9th Street Sinkor, Monrovia.

Mae Azango said the source further disclosed this is a normal scheme designed to benefit certain UL staff, where graduates pay exorbitant fees on grounds that their graduation package will be printed in China. “They usually put in a huge budget, so they can come up with the China story, the source is quoted as telling Mae.”

UL Graduation Souvenir

But some workers of the Super Designs Incorporated have rubbished information that they did the printing as false and misleading.

Since the newspaper publication, UL officials have not spoken to this specific issue.

‘’We didn’t print the souvenirs for the 99th graduating class here as it is being reported,” they clarified.

Mr. Abraham Newlane, head of Super Designs Incorporated however said that it did print medals, caps and T-shirts but only for the Sociology class and not the entire graduating class as being wrongly suggested out there.

Though Super Designs admitted doing the souvenir package only for the sociology class, our investigation uncovered that it also did same for the 2018 graduating classes of the College of Engineering and the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law.

The back of the T-shirts of the Engineering College bears the inscription, ‘’Leaders in Innovative Engineering Education” while the Medals for the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law contains the slogan, “MOR-WA-KEH” meaning ‘’we have done it’.

It was also unearthed that undergraduate batches of the 99th graduating class were done at Super Designs Incorporated in concert with Advance Printer on Benson Street.

Our findings have meanwhile revealed that there is no local printer operating on the 9th street Sinkor bearing the name ‘’ C. Print” and that the local number placed on the back of the medal is inactive.

It remains unclear as to where the graduation souvenir packages were actually printed: Liberia or the People’s Republic of China?

The tale that they were done in China leaves more questions than answers, with the UL administration under the watchful eyes of Dr. Weeks yet to provide any clarity on the matter. JoselineG. Seville, Foday S.P. Lumeh and Morwu B. Kowo contributed to this report. This is part of a series of campus-based stories by students of the Mass Communication Department at the University of Liberia (UL) to be featured on this platform over the next week
