Describes Claims As False, Misleading And Political That Diplomatic Cargo Being Used

MONROVIA, Liberia– Minister of Foreign Affairs Sara Beysolow Nyanti has firmly rejected allegations linking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to drug trafficking through diplomatic cargo, describing the claims as false, misleading, and damaging to Liberia’s international reputation.
Speaking Thursday, August 6, 2026 during the Ministry of Information Ministry’s regular press briefing in Monrovia, Minister Nyanti clarified that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no role in inspecting, handling, or managing diplomatic cargo.
She explained that the ministry’s responsibility is limited to verifying the diplomatic status of accredited diplomats through the Office of the Chief of Protocol, while duty-free clearance and
customs related procedures are handled by the appropriate customs authorities.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that diplomatic shipments are protected under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and are processed in accordance with internationally accepted procedures.
Nyanti noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs neither examines the contents of diplomatic cargo nor supervises its movement, dismissing suggestions that the ministry could facilitate the transportation of illegal substances through diplomatic channels.
She disclosed that allegations targeting both her and the ministry have circulated since 2023 but said the latest accusations are particularly troubling because they risk undermining ongoing investigations into drug trafficking and could erode Liberia’s credibility with international partners, warning that spreading unsubstantiated claims could weaken the country’s efforts to build international cooperation in combating transnational crime.
The Foreign Minister further revealed that she has been engaged in high-level diplomatic discussions with several countries, including Morocco, Rwanda, the United Kingdom, and the United States, to strengthen international collaboration against transnational drug trafficking networks.
At the same time, Foreign Minister Beysolow Nyanti has urged Liberians to support the government’s anti-drug campaign by providing credible information to security agencies rather than spreading unverified allegations, stressing that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains fully committed to supporting national efforts to combat narcotics trafficking.
